Chemical and Biological Treatments is an emerging concept in wastewater treatment and management. It is used to treat and remove odour from the effluent gas so that they do not pollute the environment as they leave the treatment plant. Nitrogen and sulphur compounds are the main pollutants. As such, chemical and biological treatment techniques, usually come in handy. Physical chemical removal procedures like scrubbing and adsorption, which have been used over time, are effective but costly because they require volumes of chemical reagents. Features and Benefits Chemical and Biological Treatments can be used together or in isolation to prevent air pollution and foul smell arising from water treatment plants. They are efficient and cost-effective and have been proved to be effective against sulphur and nitrogen pollutants. Biological treatment uses micro-organisms to oxidise malodorous organic and inorganic substances in a process known as bio-deodorisation. Bio-deodorisation usually tends to use attached growth reactors on an organic or mineral support media. The support media enables adsorption and/or absorption of the organic compounds to be removed and the attachment of purifying bacteria. Chemical treatment takes place in 2-3 scrubbers operating in a series. The first scrubbing tower is an acid scrubber and ensures the removal of any nitrogen compounds. The second tower is an oxide-alkaline tower, enabling the elimination of H2S and mercaptans. The operating principle is identical for all the scrubbing towers. A solution containing chemical reagents and softened water is installed at the foot of the tower. A recirculation pump lifts it to the sprinkling ramps at the top of the scrubbing tower. The dirty gas finds its way to the top of the scrubbing tower and is treated as it comes into contact with the tower.
